I recently learned about a simple and powerful tool from Daniel Pink’s book A Whole New Mind.
Whenever you hear yourself saying (or thinking):
“I want to [blank], but [blank].”
CHANGE IT TO….
“I want to [blank], AND {blank}, SO [blank]”.
Huh???
Don’t worry. When you see it in action, you will understand.
“I want to go for a run in the morning, butI have to be at work early tomorrow.”
CHANGE IT TO…
“I want to go for a run in the morning, AND I have to be at work early tomorrow,SO I will go to bed a little earlier tonight and wake up a little earlier tomorrow.”

“I want to be seen for Burr in Hamilton, but I don’t have an agent.”
CHANGE IT TO….
“I want to be seen for Burr in Hamilton, AND I don’t have an agent, SO I will ask my friend who is connected to the show to forward my materials to the right person.”
OR
“I want to be seen for Burr in Hamilton, AND I don’t have an agent, SO I will put the packet on tape and send it to casting.”

“I want to play Eliza Doolittle, but my cockney dialect stinks.”
CHANGE IT TO…
“I want to play Eliza Doolittle, AND my cockney dialect stinks,SO I will hire a dialect coach.”
OR
“I want to play Eliza Doolittle, AND my cockney dialect stinks, SO I will record myself speaking the text everyday and pick it apart until I my dialect is excellent.”
