Back to School
I've got that Back to School feeling.
Today, my daughter started middle school (!), and I started the September session of JWS Online.
Of course, this is a September like no other. Yet, that familiar ambivalence still washed over me last night as I tossed and turned, unable to sleep. That beautiful mix of excitement and fear.
In my sleeplessness, I decided to name the things I love about that Back to School feeling.
Here are my three favorite highlights:
1) Beginner’s Mindset
Back to School marks the beginning of a new chapter. Back to School is a recommitment to a beginner's mindset. There is an expectation and an understanding that there are things you don't know, you’ve never heard of, and you’ve never even thought about, that are about to become a part of your consciousness. That is exciting. The opportunity for growth is awesome.
2) Relationships
Back to School means the reigniting of old relationships and the possibility for new relationships. There's something about missing your friends that allows you to remember what you valued so much about them in the first place. You get to re-enter that relationship with a renewed sense of appreciation and enthusiasm. Of course, there are always the “new kids” too. The possibility for new friendships is ripe.
3) Extracurriculars
Back to School provides you the opportunity to define something as an extracurricular or an interest outside of your primary studies. You get to decide where your curiosities lie, what you care about, and what you will voluntarily take on outside the required workload. This is a chance to get clear about passions and pursuits.
As you consider you own Back to School feeling, also consider these questions:
How might I open myself to new learnings? How might I commit to a beginner’s mindset?
Which of my existing relationships am I most excited to deepen? What new relationships might I be open to?
What else am I interested in? What do I want to pursue?
Here’s to a Back to School season full of growth!
