Legacy

What is a legacy? And how do we carry someone else’s legacy forward?

This week I've been thinking a lot about the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the work she did, the rights she fought for, and the torch she left for us to pick up and carry forward.

How might I honor her legacy?

With that question looming in my mind, yesterday I took my homeroom class at JWS Online through a series of questions so that they could dig into how legacy has shaped their own lives.

  1. Can you identify someone (whether you actually know them personally or simply know of them) whose legacy has impacted you in a positive way?

  2. Can you identify a story (whether it was one you personally had a hand in, or simply one that you've witnessed from afar) that encapsulates what made or makes this person’s legacy meaningful to you? Share that story.

  3. Can you summarize the moral of the story, or the lesson it was meant to teach in a single sentence? “And the moral of the story is…”

  4. Can you identify ways in which you can apply that lesson to your own actions, words, and behaviors?

  5. Can you identify an action you can take today, in the next 24 hours, to honor their legacy? Apply the learnings and take one small step forward.

“Whatever you choose to do, leave tracks. That means don’t do it just for yourself. You will want to leave the world a little better for your having lived.” - Ruth Bader Ginsburg
