The First Post

One of the things I love about the theatre is its impermanence. The performance lives in the moment, in the present, and when it is over, it is gone forever. The last non-downloadable art form. It can only truly be experienced live.

A side effect of my life in the theatre was that I had unintentionally trained myself to be comfortable with the temporary and uncomfortable with the permanent. I was completely unaware of this until several years ago when a dear friend of mine called me out. I had been talking to him about my desire to leave something important behind, to make a difference, to build something that outlives me. With his characteristic bluntness he said…

“Until you are ready to record your work, don’t talk to me about legacy.”

Whoa. Truth.

So, I began to wrestle with the ways in which I had restrained myself from asserting an idea in any sort of permanent form. And the ways in which my fear of being recorded had been a truly selfish act. The generous approach would be to share an idea even before it is fully formed, to give away freely and unapologetically any idea that might be in service to someone else, to commit wholly to recording my assertions so that others may grow.

Easier said than done. It has taken several years of self reflection, a whole lot of truth telling, and a great deal of discomfort… and here we are. Step one. The blog.

After the blog comes the podcast (coming in October), the book, and a bunch of digital projects that will be released over the next few years.

It is scary. It is necessary. I know it will be good for me. And, hopefully, it will be good for you, too.
