Why Email Is the Devil, or Science!
Did you know that, according to research out of UC Irvine, the average person checks their email 74 times a day?!
That does not mean they RESPOND to email 74 times a day. But it does mean that they check to see if anyone needs something from them, wants their attention, or thinks they are important enough to reach out to.
“Danger! The constant need to check your email is a case of FOMO and FOPO.”
Fear of Missing Out
and
Fear of People’s Opinions
A recent study by Adobe found that the average person spends 2.5 hours a day on their personal email and 3 hours per day on their work-related email.
WHAT. THE. HELL??!
A wise man once told me (and I’m paraphrasing):
Your email inbox is essentially other people adding their crap to your to-do list.
Do you want to manage someone else’s to-do list 74 times a day? Are you willing to give up HOURS a day that you could be spending on your art? On your imagination? On daydreaming? On creating the space for your next great idea to show up?
OK, if you still need more convincing, how about this scientific tidbit: When you switch tasks (“I’m in the middle of something important, but let me quickly check my email”), it takes your brain just over 22 minutes to fully resume the initial task. Ouch. 22 minutes!
Email is the Devil, my friends. Yes, yes, I know, you NEED it. I hear you. I need it too. BUT do we really need it 74 times a day?
Take back your time.
Take back your life.
Put some boundaries in place so that you can BE AN ARTIST.
I dare you.
