Sondheim Seminar

THE ULTIMATE PARTY FOR MT NERDS

Welcome to Sondheim Seminar
with Jen and Drew

“[Sondheim] leaves us the eclecticness and mastery of his work, all these musicals, every single one, a completely different work unto itself.” - Lin-Manuel Miranda

Calling all musical theatre nerds, lyric lovers, and composition connoisseurs. You are invited to 8 delicious weeks of exploring, investigating, and immersing yourself in the world of Stephen Sondheim’s work. In this seminar, we will dive deep and develop a new understanding and appreciation for the most influential musical theatre writer of all time.

We will explore the history of Sondheim’s work (and legacy). We will analyze the lyrical structure. We will examine the musical themes and devices. In short, we will nerd the f*ck out.

To be clear, this is not a performance class. There will absolutely be opportunities for folks to get up and sing Sondheim’s music, but that is just the icing on the cake. This is an analysis class all about understanding exactly what makes Sondheim’s work critically important.

You will leave the seminar with a familiarity with all of Sondheim's major works (and some of his lesser known works as well) and a treasure trove of knowledge about how to mine every detail out of your material moving forward (whether it is Sondheim or not).

There is outside-of-class homework required. So please plan accordingly.

Class size is limited to 16 artists.

Thursdays. 10am-1pm
January 9, 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13, 20, 27
