Closing Rituals
One of the hardest parts of being an auditioning actor is the lack of closure after an audition. It can drive a person crazy. The silence. The not knowing.
Some of the smartest actors I know have hacked that system by providing themselves with a closing ritual that they perform after every single audition… regardless of how it went. They give themselves the gift of closure and release the need for anyone else to provide it for them.
Here are some of my favorite closing rituals that clients have shared with me:
Throw out the sides immediately after leaving the audition room.
Schedule a volunteer opportunity for the same day as the audition.
Before you exit the audition building, commit to leaving the experience behind you. When you step out of the door of the building, let that represent symbolically stepping into a new experience.
Do a full minute of box breathing.
Repeat an affirmation like “I am an artist, therefore I choose faith over fear.”
Write in a gratitude journal.
I’m sure there are so many other great ideas out there. If you have a closing ritual you’d be willing to share, I’d love to hear it.
